PMR or Private Mobile Radio is the original two-way
radio dating from 1947 when the first system was licensed by the then G.P.O.
At first it was used principally by the police, fire brigade and other official bodies.
These day's it's use has extended throughout industry and it is used wherever immediate communication is required. It can be tailored to either cover small areas, such as building sites or department stores where handportables are often used, or large 30 mile radius systems for use by taxis, refuse trucks etc, using vehicle mounted equipment or motorcycle couriers and traffic wardens using handportables.

It's main benefits over other forms of wireless communications are:
1. It is instant. There are no call set up delays. Instead of dialling a number and waiting, one simply has to push the button to talk. This immediacy is often vital, for instance, when used by security guards and where safety is concerned.

2. One can talk to many users at the same time, therefore the controller of a taxi fleet or the co-ordinator of a large leisure event can broadcast messages to all of their operatives
simultaneously.

3. It does not rely on mobile phone networks for its operation. It is very robust and will continue to work during extreme weather conditions, civil unrest, terrorist attacks and virtually anything you throw at it.

4. It is very robst and does not rely on mobile phone networks for its operation. It will continue to work in extreme weather conditions, civil unrest, terror attacks or anything you throw at it.

5. It is not illegal to use a mobile radio whilst driving, unlike mobile phones.
